Teaching for Artistic Behaviours
Teaching for Artistic Behaviour (TAB) is a choice-based art education approach to teaching art. The Teaching for Artistic Behaviour concept enables students to experience the work of the artist through authentic learning opportunities and responsive teaching.
Choice-based art education regards students as artists and offers them real choices for responding to their own ideas and interests through the making of art. Choice-based art education supports multiple modes of learning and assessment for the diverse needs of students.
I have been trialling this programme and fine tuning it to suit the needs of Te Puna School students and our curriculum. I am adapting the concepts of TAB to incorporate Dance and Drama components and to provide authentic contexts that the students relate to and have ownership of. Maori identity, language and culture is an integral part of my arts programme.
I am still in the investigation stage, but I am excited and motivated and the students are loving exploring their creative skills; as they are provided with resources and opportunities to construct knowledge and meaning in the process of art making and performing.
