Teaching for Artistic Behaviours

Teaching for Artistic Behaviours

Teaching for Artistic Behaviour (TAB) is a choice-based art education approach to teaching art. The Teaching for Artistic Behaviour concept enables students to experience the work of the artist through authentic learning opportunities and responsive teaching.
Choice-based art education regards students as artists and offers them real choices for responding to their own ideas and interests through the making of art.  Choice-based art education supports multiple modes of learning and assessment for the diverse needs of students.
I have been trialling this programme and fine tuning it to suit the needs of Te Puna School students and our curriculum. I am adapting the concepts of TAB  to incorporate Dance and Drama components and to provide authentic contexts that the students relate to and have ownership of. Maori identity, language and culture is an integral part of my arts programme.
I am still in the investigation stage, but I am excited and motivated and the students are loving exploring their creative skills; as they are provided with resources and opportunities to construct knowledge and meaning in the process of art making and performing.

Crafting Skills with Room 4

Today we practised our cutting and pasting skills. The students coloured parts of a butterfly and then cut them out, put the butterfly together and pasted it into their Art journals.
Buzzy bees were also the buzz today. We pasted yellow and black tissue paper onto our bees and then added eyes, antennae and wings. Oh and of course the stinger!
You can see our finished Buzzy Bees in Room 4.

The Magic Flying Carpet

The junior and middle syndicates have been creating short drama skits about discovering magic flying carpets. They have enjoyed developing their ideas about where they found the carpet, how they felt and what they said as it began to lift off the floor, and of course where it took them to!
These photos (above and below) show Ella and Lauren presenting their skit.

Amazing Flying Machines Years 3-6

The middle syndicate have been creating drawings of amazing flying machines as part of our theme this year "Te Rangi".
We have also been integrating dance and drama sessions around the same topic.
The images show some of the students working co-operatively to create human flying machines, paying particular attention to creating formations that show varying levels to enhance interest.

Above: Cam sits at the wheel inside a "flying machine".

Above: Milan is the energy source of this flying machine, while Greer provides the mid level part by balancing on her head and hands.

Keep an eye on the blog to see upcoming posts of the students drawings of flying machines.
